SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN MANGA SPOILERS

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Bertholdt Fubar
Character Canon: Shingeki no Kyojin | Attack on Titan

History: ( boop )

AU History:

Bertholdt was stripped of parental figures very early in his life, having been orphaned within the Order of the Union. I’m keeping his past rather open ended for potential Reiner or Annie castmates, he and his new family of human friends raised themselves -- all orphaned. Being a Shifter Enlightened and knowing early into his childhood he was one, he started feeling overheated and sweating more than the usual human being. His first moments as a Cyndaquil occurring during a heat stroke in the dead of July in his seventh year of life, his body saving itself from what his human form could not. He transformed into the quiet natured Pokemon out of desperation. From there he taught himself how to control his abilities by seeking refuge among the fire type Pokemon within the Pokemon Habitat, as well as finding he had a amazing connection with Pokemon themselves -- much stronger than any human.

As Bertholdt grew older he sought release of society’s chains, having been enrolled in schooling at the age of ten. The other children, though for the most part standoffish to him, showed deep and prominent signs of jealousy to his obvious Enlightenment. It was around this time Bertholdt grew bitter about human contact..

*PM STARTS HERE*

His obvious signs of being a shifter give Bertholdt easy access to whatever profession he favors. After his finals, passing marvelously, he joined the Guard around the age of sixteen and has been supporting their fight for over a year now, keeping distance from his teammates just like always.

Canon Personality:

Bertholdt Fubar is in canon a shy, timid and seemingly harmless young man that joined the military at the young age of thirteen with his best childhood friends Reiner Braun and Annie Leonheart. During the fall of Wall Maria he escaped within the walls to take shelter with the other refuges and we know little about his personality back then but from what we can assume not much has changed. Still very aversive when it comes to socialization in more of the shy way where he has problems speaking his opinion, preferring to hold his tongue, instead of independence because he doesn’t really possess the confidence to lead himself let alone other people.

The first time we meet Bertholdt Fubar he is around ten years-old, even if we don’t know his identity. It is only many chapters later that he finally is given lines and we get to know Mr. Fubar on a deeper level and when he is revealed as humanity's greatest enemy-- The Colossal Titan. During this scene he is revealed by no other than his best friend and accomplice, Reiner Braun who is suffering with memory loss and delusions. We see Bertholdt’s strong loyalty to Reiner during these times especially as he tries to defend him in anyway possible from lying for him to transforming and aiding the impending fight despite being shifter with poor offensive skills.

Much to Bertholdt’s dismay, this marks where most of his development has occurred thus far. Up until this point, Bertholdt has shown little to no issue with Reiner’s decisions or motives, and follows them accordingly without fail. It’s only after their secret is revealed Bertholdt does find himself a backbone and confronts Reiner about his delusions. It happens only once but what it does is bring the subject matter to the table that Bertholdt needs someone to lead him, which mostly is the reason his anger and worry is induced. An example of how loyal and unquestioning he has been for Reiner previously is during their transition from training to a designated faction (Military Police, Scouting Legion, or Garrison) Bertholdt against all good and logical knowledge chose to continue following Reiner’s delusional choices against his better judgement, this single choice jeopardized their entire mission. You could say these acts come from his low self esteem and extreme introverted personality.

Their (Bertholdt, Reiner and Annie’s) motives are currently unknown in canon. Though it is known that they were pushed to do these evil deeds such as breaking holes in Wall Maria and killing thousands, leaving almost as many homeless due to their young age when Wall Maria was attacked we can assume that they were forced or manipulated to do so. This outside source is also unknown but whomever they turn out to be has the power of manipulation over small overpowered children and most likely the cause of their titan-shifting abilities. The original plan was to invade the innermost circle -- Wall Sina -- by joining the Military Police but everything changed once they found that Eren Jaeger (the protagonist) was also a shifter, like them. This comes to a surprise, instead of going through with their plan Reiner Braun thinks it’s best to take Eren “home” with them. This is when their motivations change* to kidnapping over breaking down the walls and Bertholdt seems exhausted during most of the event, repeating that he “just wants to go home” during much of the reveal.

* Reiner and Bertholdt change plans only, Annie stick to the original and does not join them.

Bertholdt has great potential as a fighter and as a shifter but rarely applies himself unless needed. Their military training was vital, so he applied himself and became third best in a class of over one hundred students. Needing to keep a cover during their training years shows, if anything, his will and dedication to keeping loyal to a cause -- again, because it was needed of him. In the beginning, Bertholdt sees no point in befriending the other pre-teens in his unit. Not only is he timid and crushingly shy but they will be the same people that seek out his destruction once they know he is the Colossal Titan. Bertholdt finds it easier to lie to their faces, making false stories, claiming he and Reiner can relate to their fears. In the end he fails at keeping distance, however… Using his fake life to finally make friends on his own and feel included.

His loyalty to Reiner might be a mirror to the fact that the boy is a massive coward, putting all the pressure of leading on his best friend who unfortunately is dealing with his guilt in detrimental ways. Later when confronted by teammates about his treason Bertholdt breaks down and claims to regret what he has done and that he values the friendships he had made and that he and Reiner had been forced into breaking into Wall Maria and Trost. It’s easy to say that if he were to be alone, Bertholdt could not complete this mission.

AU Deviation:

Bertholdt, of course, shows signs of being a shifter in appearance. He has long elf-like ears, sharp teeth, sleek claw like-nails, and bright red eyes. His hair gives off an auburn glow just like that of the shiny Cyndaquil, smelling often of sweat and ash as his human body continues to have difficulty controlling the fire-type natural overwhelming heat. Often others can catch Bertholdt blushing -- however it’s not from embarrassment and instead from his skin being so smoldering warm. Unlike his childhood however, Bertholdt has grown accustomed to the heat, finding no trouble living through the summer in long winter coats when not in guard uniform. He uses long sleeves, jackets, etc to cover his body in hopes to keep others from starring despite the discomfort.

Canon Abilities:

  • Titan Shifting: Other than eating pizza The Colossal Titan is one of humanity’s biggest threats and one of Bertholdt’s special abilities. Like the main character, Eren, he can shift into one of these massive creatures. Bertholdt’s the largest so far coming in at 60 meters tall. In this form he can produce large amounts of steam that comes in a variety of pressures. At the most it could easily blow away enemies, even kill them from its heat. Bertholdt is a slow moving titan and while he is gigantic in size he can’t run away in this form, his neck (a titan’s weakness) is also completely exposed. He might also have issues transforming more than once a day for unlike the other shifters he is the only one that has never transformed twice in one day. This is likely due to his size.

  • Military Training: He has been considered to have great potential but lacking initiative in his military training, Bertholdt Fubar is very skilled, having racked third in his graduating class out of over one hundred individuals. Very good team player because he expresses more introverted personality and follower traits. He ranked the best overall in using 3DMG.

  • Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear: The gear each solder is equipped with, much like a hookshot the gear is designed to fling them around across different surfaces and help them kill titans.

    Enlightened Abilities:

Bertholdt is a Shifter type Enlightened. Much like his canon he is surrounded by constant heat, this comes from being a shiny Cyndaquil in this AU. His move set consists of ember and smokescreen currently and he is of the quiet nature, the low speed stat makes it hard for him to learn moves like quick attack.

Once he starts learning more fire moves he will show signs of becoming more uncomfortable in his human skin (sweating more.) He’ll get hot flashes around the time of evolutions, Quilava not as noticeable but during his Typhlosion his skill will literally steam. He will learn the basic moves that line learns naturally, overheat though tm, perhaps a good wild charge/thunder punch if needed also though tm.

As a Cyndaquil he will have that shiny auburn fur, more scruffy than your average ‘Quil, not to mention taller. Where normal Cyndaquil are around a foot tall Bertholdt is, much like his human form, double that coming in around two feet. As he evolves into the Quilava strange he will come in around four feet over the normal two feet and as a Typhlosion around seven feet over only five feet.

Starter Pokémon: Female Magby named Sundrop.

    Notes/Special Considerations:
*PM will include what was discussed with Mods.

    SAMPLES

    First-Person: ( Canonverse PSL with Armin )

    Third-Person:

Bertholdt has never been fond of schooling. It’s not that he doesn’t enjoy reading or learning but the people around him make his blood run cold. He finds himself growing nervous, scared to speak.. so test time was his absolute favorite time of class sessions. It was these times that others must stay silent, be with only their thoughts. Even though they still shared the same room Bertholdt found their presence, for once, relaxing.

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?

Everything…’ He thinks as his hand writes down that they are the most important to him over his friends, his family -- Pokemon. This test is important to him, to his cause, this will show his teachers he’s ready for guard duty.. After this test Bertholdt will be among other humans, new humans..

-What do you seek for humanity’s future?

A lie must be written here, one that is convincing but most importantly something that they want to hear, what the Union wanted to hear. It didn’t matter if he saw people differently or not. ‘Prosperity.’ The answer is simple, much like his nature among humans -- quiet and to the point.

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?

What a wonderful, pure, question that others in this classroom with ignorantly lie about. Bertholdt knows that humans don’t know what they want, they never have. Pokemon are on a different scale from them, their goals are shoved aside like a lower form of life even now after all this suffering humanity has been put though. They will never learn, thus it the search for power.. ‘My bonds with Pokemon are my life. Being a shifter Enlightened, they voices and words mean everything to me, they are my friends and my family. We are one.

-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?

My ability to relate, to understand..’ Shifters understand Pokemon on levels other people in this room will never meet. Even those also Enlightened can not relate to Pokemon on the same scale as being a Pokemon themselves. How Bertholdt has related and communicated with his Magby is a bond that will never be broken, and understanding the state of exchanged emotions that creatures of different origin can’t understand is the most important thing.

He curls his alburn tinted hair in his fingers thinking this deeply about humans, this test is the least favorite study he’s ever engrossed himself in.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

This lie makes him sick, the sensation in his stomach right now.. the want, the need to hurl. Everything about this question is designed to corner those he would stand against in the Union, only followers may be granted acceptance.. all others must be removed and smited just like the Pokemon they so wish to condemn once again, ‘The human of course, we try and settle our disagreements reasonably.’ …..Bertholdt would never talk like this in real life, the thought of it sounded so collective almost makes him smile.

-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?

His pencil stops, eyes fixated on the paper in front of him.. the question is so direct and yet to Bertholdt he knows he can answer this truthfully. When he once again starts writing he hides his face in his turtle necked sweater to shield any strange expression.

To go against what benefits us all..
